The Safety Problem with Space Heaters in New York

The efficiency gap is the key: a space heater converts electricity to heat at a 1:1 ratio (COP of 1.0). A heat pump mini split moves heat from the outdoor air into the room at a 2.5:1 to 3.5:1 ratio. It produces 2.5 to 3.5 times more heat per watt of electricity consumed. This is not a marginal difference; it is a fundamental physics advantage.

Over three winters, it is $1,410. A mini split costs $3,000 to $5,000 to install (often $1,500 to $3,000 after rebates) and runs at $50 to $75/month, saving $100 to $250 per heating season while being permanently safe.
Insurance and Liability Considerations
Homeowner and renter insurance policies typically cover space heater fires, but claims can be complicated if the heater was used improperly (placed too close to combustibles, left unattended, connected to an extension cord). Some insurance companies have begun asking about space heater use during underwriting, and a fire loss caused by a space heater can increase premiums significantly.
Mini splits carry no additional insurance risk. They are permanently installed appliances that meet building code requirements when installed by a licensed contractor with permits. No insurer will increase your premium for having a mini split.
