Why is my mini split not cooling or heating?
When a mini split stops cooling or heating well, the most common causes are dirty filters or coils restricting airflow, wrong mode or remote settings, a blocked or iced outdoor unit, or low refrigerant from a leak, with electrical or sensor faults less common. Start with the simple checks, mode, temperature, filters, and outdoor clearance, because those solve many cases for free. What should you check first?
- Mode and setpoint: confirm it is on Cool or Heat and set correctly, not on Fan or Dry.

- Remote batteries and power: rule out a dead remote or tripped breaker.

Is it a sizing or installation problem?
A mini split that never quite keeps up may simply be undersized for the room or poorly installed, especially in a drafty NYC space, which no repair will fix without resizing or correction.
